Hello everyone!

What’s YOUR State of Agility?

Hello fellow business agility leaders!

One of the things I enjoy is digging into the data we have and finding insights and patterns. Teams are really telling us a lot about how they're doing and where they need help and it's important that we listen.

We've started something cool, yes data can be cool, called the State of Agility report and roadshow.  It's our way of bringing data to life!

What is a State of Agility?  It's a deeper look at the data across your teams, both maturity and performance metrics. We look back across 12-24 months and extract patterns such as growth over time, how key roles have impacted growth, top organizational obstacles and how you benchmark internally or against others.

After looking at the data for several companies recently, it’s very interesting to see common themes emerging around where teams are stuck and where organizations need to focus.

There are three themes that are consistently brought forth as enterprise growth areas:

Product Management and Planning Maturity - this was the most prominent theme we saw and it has influenced our updates to TeamHealth 4.0 (available March)

  1. It's become clear that the Product Owner role is not enough to serve the team and the concept of Product Leadership for teams is becoming more important Product leadership team is made up of the PO, product managers and business and technology leaders.
  2. We're still not good at planning ahead of the teams. Teams are saying they need better clarity with sufficient details ( that pass the definition of ready). Dependencies remain a challenge and almost all groups are asking for visibility into roadmaps so they can improve cross-org planning especially with shared services teams.

Technical Agility and the Role of the Tech Lead

  1. Managing technical debt and prioritizing it on the backlog (this is consistently a challenge expressed by several teams)
  2. Having the right technical lead available to support the teams.
  3. Teams are struggling with their technical environments, testing and CICD

Team Structure, Roles and Stability

  1. Teams are asking to be dedicated and stable- managers are still moving people around or pulling people to work on other priorities.
  2. Roles are not clear and they are missing key roles within teams to get the work done
  3. Upskilling - team members asked for more time to be able to upskill themselves and learn new technology or understand their role better

Look, I know what you're thinking, these are all foundational problems we've addressed but I challenge you to look closer in your own backyard and you'll be surprised that many of these still exist.

Now the good news, we were really happy to see that many teams have improved their performance by 20-40%, and overall maturity from 30-50%. Some teams have improved Predictability from 40% to 90%!

By investing in measurement and relentless improvement, teams are really growing in a measurable way - it’s WORKING!

If you're ready to start your own journey and not sure where to begin, hit reply and we're happy to provide guidance based on where you are.

ENTERPRISE BUSINESS AGILITY STRATEGIST CERTIFICATION: IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

We often get asked - who should get their EBAS certification? Should we send one person? Should we send everyone? Should we send one person? What’s your recommendation? We get these questions often enough we wanted to share the answers with all of you.

The people that we believe should consider getting their EBAS certification are those that are helping to lead the transformation at your organization - executives and enterprise coaches that are charged with ensuring your transformation to the new ways of working is successful. We recommend that you get 2-3 people in your organization certified, or, if you have a fully formed LACE, we can certify your entire LACE team in a private workshop.

If you have questions about whether or not this workshop is right for you, please review the course description to see if it’s right for you. Hear from one of our recent participants about how they felt after taking the workshop:

“I thoroughly enjoyed this course. After taking this course, I am able to identify the global characteristics of agility which can be applied to all aspects of enterprise: flexibility, responsiveness, speed, culture of change, integration and low complexity, high quality and customized products, and mobilization of core competencies. There is nothing right or wrong; we have to change the way we operate.”
